When Our Eyes Are Closed, What Do We See?

Here are some possibilities:

(1.) blackness or a grey haze,
(2.) nothing at all (not even blackness),
(3.) a field of shifting colors,
(4.) afterimages on a background field of black or gray,
(5.) patterns of color, not obviously related to external stimulus, on a field of black or gray,
(6.) visual imagery of objects, maybe like a dream or a daydream or a faint perception or a hallucination?

What do you think?

Last week I asked visitors here and a number of people around UCR. The responses were wonderfully various, and some of them quite detailed, but if I had to summarize or force them into boxes I'd say I got these results:

(1) black/grey (possibly shifting or undulating): 4 respondents;
(2) usually nothing, not even blackness: 1 respondent;
(3) colors: 4 or 5 respondents;
(4) afterimages: 1 or 2 respondents;
(5) patterns of color against a black or grey background: 5 respondents;
(6) visual imagery of objects or scenes: 1 respondent, but 3 others mentioned that they sometimes have this experience or they have it after a while.

Now what's interesting to me in this is the variability in the responses. Do people really experience such radically different things when they close their eyes? I don't think we can dismiss these differences as differences merely in the language used to convey basically the same idea (except maybe between 3 and 5, though even there only in some cases). Could some people simply be wrong about such an apparently easily observable matter?

To bolster some of the less popular responses:

On (2): Many researchers think we don't have conscious experience at all without attention -- for example, when we're not attending to the refrigerator hum in the background, we don't have any auditory experience of it at all. Others disagree. (I've written about this here and posted on it here.) If we go with those who deny experience outside of attention, and if we think that when our eyes are closed we normally aren't visually attending to anything, that lends some credence to (2). Of course, on this view, when I ask you what your visual experience is, and then you close your eyes, your attentional state is atypical and you'll probably experience something. But this may be quite unrepresentative of our visual experience when we're listening to music with eyes closed or when we're trying to fall asleep, etc.

On (1): This response can be buttressed by a related argument. Maybe paying attention to visual experience with one's eyes closed does something to bring out or enliven that experience, with afterimages and shifting colors, but normally, when we're not really attending, its more like a plain black or grey field.

On (4): Early introspective psychologists like Purkinje, Helmholtz, and Titchener, seemed to think afterimages consistuted a major part of one's eyes-closed visual experience. They studied this stuff intensively, so I don't think we should simply dismiss their reports.

Okay, I've managed to completely bewilder myself! Any thoughts about how (and whether) we can make progress on this question? Maybe it's not, strictly speaking, an especially important question. But it's a basic question -- one that's surprisingly hard to find good discussions of, this late in our study of the mind and visual experience.

I see faces and figures, usually faces though. They are normally attractive females. :)
I don't think I've seen in colour, usually grey.
I also sometimes hear voices, just random phrases, or my name. It usually sounds like family members, and when I think of sentences I usually hear them being said, quite clearly, but in my head. I also "go for a spin". It feels like I'm tilting back, but then I return to normal once I'm vertical, with feet in the air. Then a second or two later it happens again. This can go on for minutes.
It also sometimes looks like I can see my room even though my eyes are shut. It's dark and slightly blurry, like my eyes are slightly open. But they're definitely shut.
It's never scary, in fact I enjoy it.

As I've explained elsewhere on this site I see very intricate and specific things. I've made notes of what I've seen a few times to see if I come across them in my life. I have come across some of the things in news articles or on the web. Not exciting stuff, and probably common enough to be coincedence. For example I might see a pride of lions and a few days later read a Yahoo article about some new research on Lions.

Has anyone else tried this?

Eric - what percentage of the populatons sees pictures?

ah me open eyes looking at thoughts dude again i have to admit im alitle worried i have to go true delusonal tests and stuff like that its not like i belive the things i create in my mind i dont hear stuff i dont belive anny wierd things i just see my thoughts when my eyes are open but reality usaly goes awey then but aswell focus enough i can create it in reality but im fully aware of its my thoughts imagination i dont just sudenly see stuff ether well if ppl are talking about a red box i seen before or soo i can see it fast when my eyes are open. i just gotta ask is there a big chanse i get countet as delusional or somthing like that when i go to the docter ?

CWM: I don't think specific percentages have been measured. My guess is that it might vary a lot depending on the exact prompt. My own impression is that it is a definite but non-trivial minority (ballpark 20%).

Anon: If you can distinguish accurately between those experiences and reality, I don't think it would be accurate to classify you as delusional. My recommendation would be not to worry about it unless what you see interferes with your functioning or upsets you emotionally. All the same, doctors sometimes overreact to such reports, so I would be cautious.

I see this all the time when i close my eyes or when im staring into the light for a long period of time. Just today i was looking into the sky and i saw a red figure in the shape of a 7 or the shape of Florida. Not sure but i can share that I'm going to Florida next week and I've been thinking of it a lot recently..

When i close my eyes almost straight away i see a blue/violet blob which sometimes changes from red to green (i'm partially colourblind to green) and sometimes once i open my eyes the blue colour continues for a minute or so

There have been periods in my life, lasting for maybe a month, when I would see extremely vivid three dimensional geometric figures. The different segments of the figures were were brightly colored in various colors. I would see these figures when my eyes were closed for sort periods, so short that it may have been nothing more than a blink.

I'm 20, Artist/Illustrator in training. I've always seen colours too, mostly of the colours vortexing into the middle kind or even just static. I always thought it was normal so I never gave it much thought.

However, it has started to get really intense; now I'm seeing images of people/faces/eyes/crazy patterns all constantly changing and morphing into something else, reaching out to me. Not only at night when I close my eyes but when I open them in the dark.. I decided to look it up because I couldn't sleep without having a light on.

Now I'm learning to block it out, I find that if I don't consentrate on what I see I can fall asleep.

I've concluded that it's mostly to do with how active your imagination is, I can see a lot in patterns in the physical world.. I've been exersizing that skill recently so it's transfered to the patterns I see when I close my eyes. However, it's still more than piecing the puzzel.. it's almost like intense day dreaming.

It's good to hear that other people have experienced this too, I was beginning to worry that my mind had finally taken over the physical world.

When I close my eyes at night I see nothing but dark. However, within a few minutes I see a bright light and then I see people, faces and scenery. I can make out everything from what they are wearing or doing. I have always wondered about this because I have been having this for years; more so in the last 8 years. I had some questions the other night that I was thinking about while I was laying in bed. The next day all my questions were answered by people I came in contact with. I've wondered about this as well. I ran into a gal yesterday that I met in Mexico during the summer. I didn't give her my phone number and today I receive a text message that said, nice to bump into you yesterday. I hope all is well. There was no name so I didn't know who it was. I texted the person back and her name was the same as the gal but it wasn't my friend. So yesterday I was at work talking to my supervisor about her dog. Moments later her boss comes up the elevator and looks at me and says, have you ever read dog whispers? This is no lye! Just before this I was in my office and scrathed my private area. My boss came in and said that she wanted me to co-faciltate a meeting with a doctor for STD's. I was floored! What's going on here guys?? Thanks ~T~

I have a 6 year old son who has complained of seeing a puple light coming towards him which he also describes as a puple cloud. He is scared by it yet manages to fall asleep within a half hour. Just tonight he told me he sees random things " cartoons" as he descibes them in his periphreal vision.

Weird to see many people experiencing the same thing. He was recently diagnosed with compulsive/hyperactive ADHD yet he is not on meds. I am just glad it's somewhat normal and not paranormal. I guess I needed reassurance... now to help him accept this and not to be scared!

Eric,
I have been observing the closed eye visual field for some time.
Have you noticed that the " screen" is stationary when the eyes are moved side to side or when the head is moved fast. If the head is moved slowly the "screen" moves. This is the same as the visual field when the eyes are open and shows , I think that the inner ear has a coupling to the apparent orientation.
The appearance of the screen changes in a predictable way for me at least if I hold full attention (like meditation) on the screen.
When viewing intently I notice that an unexpected sound such as the tone of alert for seatbelts on a plane will result in a visual burst.
With practice it is possible to sense the "screen" in normal vision with eyes open and have an altered perception of the visual sensation.

Hi everyone, in the last 2 years I have seen colours, pictures (moving pictures like a movie and still pictures), swirls and patterns - criss cross colours (like computer language). I believe this is part of the Kundalini awakening. I started having massage, horstmann therapy and quantum therapy which I think brought this experience on 2 - 3 years ago. The weekend I received quantum therapy I heard voices in my room, the voices were many and loud and not recogniseable, they came towards me and down through my right ear, I felt a tingle of pain as they entered my right ear and into my body or soul (which I believed was communication from above to my soul, there is no other way I can explain this feeling and experience and I was very much awake at the time)I also wasn't taking any drugs or alcohol. This absolutely terrified me but my quantum therapist assured me that everything was okay, and that I was here for a spiritual purpose and that I was an earth angel (as there are many of us going through this experience now leading up to 2012 and beyond). After this first time occurrance I started seeing images, and started viewing in colour - moving pictures. The faces and demons entered my vision nearly every night over a 12 month period. And I have been told they are aspects of myself (created from all my past life times - they are energy in fact). They do not harm you. The more I viewed them, the less I was scared. They have since left me, as I believe that karma has been cleared and I have been released into a new vibration and new location since I have moved. I believe this awakening will reveal itself as we go along. There are stages and breaks as well. I have had years of bullying & abuse all my life and this came up repeatedly until I got so sick of it I got my own back and started sticking up for myself. I believe I am done with this chapter of my life. I am 37 and life has been a struggle, I am a single mother, ex military and a shy and soft person who has been beaten up by jealous, competitive bullies.....my self esteem has been dragging on the floor behind me for years. I have been told once you get so far with the Kundalini process you will begin to vibrate higher and you will be able to manifest into your life - abundance. I truly hope so as life has been difficult......I do have hope. I have read the kundalini is like an actual death. I feel that way, I'm so exhausted from all the abuse and struggle. I am on a breakat the moment (not seeing anything really but still seeing purple.........but I can't wait for my spirits and visions to return as I feel very special. In fact a clairvoyant has told me I will be able to see and speak with angels in the future. I get alot of joy reading the latest messages on www.spiritlibrary.com and karen bishops website.........they keep me going!! I just want to say that this is happening to many people acrose the globe and don't be scared go with it.....and always ask for protection if you are scared - you have connected to the spiritual world. hi i had done this before but this time it was more intense...i closed my eyes and was able to see a lot of people whom i never seen before in my life.. and not only that when i opened my eyes i was still seeing stuff(room was dark). ok so that was that and something freaky happened i closed my eyes again (this time with the lights on) and saw the people again but this i looked at a woman and told her i can see her and to my surprise she put both her hands on her cheeks and acted very surprised in terms of human being expressions any idea what this is?

Wow all so very interesting. My experiences when closing my eyes are seeing white moving lights that change shape as they move towards me. On other occasions it's like I'm watching changing scenarios, for example last night I was watching all these people in suits walk through a tunnel. Some of them seemed to be aware that i was there, but they were looking down on me, so i must have been sitting down. Other times it's like I'm flying just above the road with the hills and trees on either side really green. I usually have these experiences every night unless I'm dead tired and fall straight to sleep.

its insane that i found this webpage!
good to know how internet can bring answers to lesser discussed topics in science.
I see faces. they are always unknown.
I have never seen these people in the past, and they are clear as ever. almost illustrated.
these are faces that are expressive, but never "talk" or atleast im to scared to "hear" it. I can see alot, almost feels like i can see the cosmos. with your eyes closed they say you do the most beautiful things- pray, kiss, heal.
this is something i am researching, i know i am not "abnormal". the word has a weird definition in society, and is terribly misused by those you are preconditioned and cannot think and challenge it.
I would like to hear from more people here, you can see people. I'm not sure how the brain can conjuncture images of people they have never seen before in a matter of a mm second, that too with no input from our end.
Any scientific progress on this. Please keep me posted

hi im Sophia. all my life i have seen swirls of colors like red, blue and purple. usually they pulse and waver. then i begin to see flashing white lights and then images and hear sounds. this is called hypnagogia which is the first stage of sleep. its one of the processes. what i think is that some are more aware it is happening than others. it depends on how sleepy you are and how balanced your conscious is. if you try to focus on it too much it goes away. some people see only black or gray i guess, but i have seen all 6 or those depending on how sleepy i am. hope this helps! :)

ps: i am very enthusiastic about hypnagogia and dreams.

I've come upon this discussion late - and thankfully so - because I also see faces, just as described by numerous posters! How glorious to know that a small boatload of us are blessed with brains that articulate our imaginations, but just in a manner that Science has yet to explain to us! (I *really* wasn't worried it was a brain tumor!) However, a few of my New Age friends have suggested that (1) My location when these experiences occur is at a vortex or portal where souls are just passing thru - that's why I don't recognize them, or (2) I'm psychic, and need to refine my skills to find my true purpose to this life, or (3) That becasue I also see them when I meditate - and that skilled meditation approaches hypnosis - I am actually self-regressing back thru visoins from my own past lives. Believe what you will! Since we seem to be measurable population, perhaps *Science* will deem us worthy of further research. Thanks!

I experience all six, plus people and their faces floating towards me with a kind of lighter field showing their image. Some times this will last seconds or minutes. This happens when I go to bed not asleep, or waking up in the morning not in dream state. I can lay there and see multiple people all races, ages, sizes, different dress from different time periods. Even dead people or what I see as dead because their is no life in their images. I also have pre-cog. abilities not all the time but my wife knows I have this ability, after 21 years of marriage.
My 15 year old daughter has the ability eyes closed seeing people too. I found your web sight to try to find answer for this situation. I know I do not control what I see because it can be very entertaining to see who pops out in front of me when I'm awake with eyes closed. thanks for your interest Eric. From ML empire Michigan.

This is what happened one time when I closed my eyes:
I was in Long Beach Calif, back from a night on the town with my shipmates. As I lay on the bed exhausted I begin to fall asleep, when suddenly I heard a loud sound like someone hitting a woden bowl. The sound was accompanied by a bright flash of light that looked like a wheel with hundreds of spokes. As the light faded it was followed by a sound as if someone was crumpling a paper bag next to my ear.

Something that I am really curious about that is related to this:

How does blindness relate to this concept? For example, does a person who had vision and became blind have a sensation of seeing nothing? or is the sense gone to such an extent that they cant even "see" blackness. On that note, does a person who has never had vision (was born blind) have any kind of "experience" of an absence of vision? Do they have a "minds eye" in which they perceive nothingness or blackness? An interesting thread on Reddit applies to this:

http://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments/gu46b/i_am_blind_ama/

This person is fielding questions and describes the sensations of sometimes perceiving flashes of light, but he has never had vision.

Just wanted to post that I am yet another person who sees those faces and found this thread Googling it. Mine are also in a slideshow of sorts, one face morphing or transitioning into another. Suddenly something can happen with the eyes of one of them, they get like this intense "evil" look. This has always freaked me out! I try to think of it like a nightmare, anyone has nightmares right? It's just weird since really I'm not asleep yet. It's when I'm just starting to relax they pounce on me.

And who are they? I have one theory that they are people I've passed in the street during the day, just in the back of my head even though I didn't think actively about them. So when I believe I made them all up/it's this supernatural thing, really it's just like a sort of dream and they are just some random people I have seen in my life.

I however have a little history of some psychological problems, not grave really, but I can have a little vivid imagination, get a little confused under stress. So maybe that is the explanation in my case, to having taking the step from seeing colors and patterns to seeing scary faces I mean.

Hello,
What I experience sometimes when I close my eyes is a flashing image of a sea horse. I found it weird but interesting and wanted to explore more about its significance, if it has one. The shape is of a perfect sea horse and it moves along as my move my closed eyes. But it was just twice that I saw it, when I deliberately try to get that image back, I don't see it. Has anyone experienced such a thing?

As to the comments of what I see when I close my eyes, I see full images. As if watching a projector they flash different scenes. I have seen people having conversations, different areas of the world, people that I know that i have never met. Sometimes I can see random images for hours, such as palm trees, fish, the queen of england, satellite dishes, and road signs in Munich Germany, the list goes on. I only see images, even though most would normally have sound, I do not hear anything. I have told no one but my wife, simply because most would say i have a mental or health issue. Hopefully the reply that I get is not anything to that. Thank you.

When i close my eyes, it is goes dark with faith pictures of what was currently being viewed before i close them. HOWEVER after about a minute of closing my eyes as hard as possible i can create / see TV quality images to my thoughts. It is very strange and quite cool to be honest, Although i dont try it often as i think it might be bad for my eyes.

Let me know if anyone else has had this experience..

I see all of the above when I close my eyes. However, sometimes I see objects, cities, streets and people I have never seen before. It is hard to keep those images in focus. I never see anything that I can recognize as seen before and I am very curious where they come from. Usually the images are static but a few times it felt as if I have glimpsed for a second into a strangers' life. Where does it come from and what am I actually seeing?

sparkx said...

this is just bizarre. I am 40 years old and have been seeing the faces for about 10 years. I never told anyone as I thoght they may think I was completely mad. One day I randomly told my son, 23, a couple of years ago about this and he was absolutely gobsmacked as he experenced the exact same thing. My younger son, 14, and my husband haven't got a clue what we are talking about.
I see the 'old fashioned' images, wagons, women in long dresses doing their washing, old men sat at the table, but mostly faces, morphing from one to another, I lay there at night and describe them to my husband, one after the other. There is no way I am thinking these characters up because as I am describing them the next appears. I have no sound, their mouths are moving, they are chattering away. I lay there giggling at them and my husband thinks I'm loopy. My son's can be more scary, he gets the demonic screaming ones.
This just has to be investegated, it's far too peculiar to just be ignored. Wouldn't it be inetresting to get a selection of say 100 random people who experience this and record their images, and then compare, that would be so fascinating and totally unexplainable.
My son and I are both 'normal' non drug taking or alcohol drinking people, I just find this absolutely intriging.

I will check back often to see if there are any developments on this, it really is the bane of my life not being able to understand why it happens.

For the past few years, since being diagnosed with ARMD (Macular Degeneration) I observed what I can best describe as a lobster shaped vision in my right eye upon closing my eyes for sleep. My left eye also had a less defined circular object that I could "see". These visions were always there, night after night. About a month ago, my retinologist injected me with my first shot for the ARMD, since he had detected a bit of blood, meaning it had changed from dry to wet. The second night after the injection, I could see that my lobster had fragmented into five distinct parts. The next night, it was similar but smaller. The night after that only a crescent at the bottom was evident, and then it was gone. I can understand that the injection could possibly affect my right eye, and the lobster, but the circular thing in my left eye is also gone. I now only have small circular dark spots in each eye. The spot in the right eye is almost round. The spot in the left eye looks like a bite has been taken out of it. As with the my other closed-eye visions, they disappear when daylight comes. As far as I can tell, this is an unintended benefit from the injection.

I found this blog after Googling "purple blogs when eyes are closed". Ever since I was a kid, I'd see blue-ish/purple-ish blobs when my eyes are closed. They only appear when I'm fully relaxed and getting ready to sleep (whether it be for the night or just prior to a nap). Like a few others have mentioned, I too can sometimes control the motion and size of the blobs. (I can't really change the hue.) I have ALWAYS wondered what causes them -- and why they only kick in after I'm relaxed -- and no one I've ever spoken to IRL has any idea what I'm talking about!

Sometimes I see movie like sepia colored images of people Last night I saw a computer screen with words scrolling down so fast I couldn't read them. Purple blobs floating. What appears to be trees in the dark with the white moon shining above through a thick cloud. I look forward to closing my eyes at night just to see these images. 62 yr old woman.

After reading this site,i feel so much better! I thought I was the only one that saw checkerboard things and swirling vortexes of colors. I asked my husband and son and they say they see black. Nothing else. I thought maybe it was because I am a more creative person and they are both very factual, by the book kind of people. I have always seen colors, moving, sometimes in swirls and sometimes just randomly. Sometimes it looks like one of those elementary school art "scratch off" pictures where the colors are beneathe the black crayon and you scratch off the black to reveal the color.Sometimes there are geometric shapes like checkerbaords made up of different colors. I can change the movement of the swirls and make them go clockwise or counter clockwise at will. Sometimes I will see other things like writing in an old timey cursive or old yellowed sheet music from a hymnal but I cannot make out the words or tune as it doesn't sit still, it fades in and out. I also have vivid color dreams with lots of detail.
I wonder how many people who have these "visions" have tinnitus? I have had humming in my head (not in my ears) as long as I can remember . The sound comes from somewhere centered in the back of my head, it seems to me. I just wondered if there were any formal studies of these things?

I'm 22 and a flood engineer in the U.K. I've never really thought about what I see when I close my eyes but usually it is shifting colours or just blank.
However every now and then in random time spacings I see vivid symbols on my eyelids when I close my eyes...they appear like alien symbols or Egyption hieroglyhs. I saw a series of them today, which is what prompted me to come online and look for anyone else who had experienced such things.
The last time I saw similar symbols was last year somewhen.
I would be very interested if anyone knows where these images may be coming from/ what causes them.

People don't let other people think your mad cause you are seeing colors while trying to sleep at night or when awake and seeing colors while driving past or walking past certain spaces. To cut a long story short this is the work of EVIL MAN trying to penetrate your energy fields and leave you for dead. How do you stop it ...GOD will with time. When a time comes and people suddenly become demonized in the streets and they start running around and shout like they have lost their minds then you will know that you're freed and these light flashes will disappear. AND the people that are causing it are the people that will lose their minds. GLORY TO GOD

I don't know if this thread is still running, couldn't see a year behind the date. To many comments to read all of them. I was wondering, Did you bundle any of this or made an actual research out of it? is there any good literature on it? Anway, I sometimes see images, or faces, sometimes just black and white specks or snow. Sometimes I see a kind of tunnel made up of geometric shapes going into eternity. Sometimes I also have afterimages especially when I have played videogames, sometimes I can kind of direct it and play the videogames in my head. Sometimes its a kind of daydream. I also have a friend who sees images every night before he goes to bed. With me its usually also around bed time. Sometimes also with weird perspectives, or weird textures. It usually happens when i'm almost falling asleep it seems your mind works differently then. It can be reminscent of drug induced experiences but I have it on and off drugs. It is also reminiscent of when I have a fever, especially then i have feverish dreams or feelings where I "feel/see" weird textures or shapes or movements. The weirdest thing ever was once when I was on mdma and high, I saw the same tunnel as I see when I am about to fall asleep and a friend of mine was going through exactly the same experience seeing the same things. There is no way to be sure and perhaps we were leading each other on but still.

Interesting observations, I find that when im trying to picture an object in my mind, the swirling objects behind my closed eyelids distorts the image im trying to create in my head, i have come to the conclusion than i am unable to envision anything due to the ridiculous amount of magic mushrooms i have eaten have caused my mind to be unable to hold a still image for more than 1.5 seconds

So many people weighing in, this is cool. Usually I see a staticy background, with red/yellowish/brown color depending on how bright the room is. If I think about it, I can see the static with my eyes open. If I relax enough I can see all kinds of things, but it's not an everyday experience. Only when I'm sufficiently relaxed and in the right state of mind, which isn't very often. I've had this experience in broad daylight standing up. It can be swirls of colors, crazy fractal patterns, flashes of images and surrealistic scenes. Sometimes it can be realistic scenes. Usually there is a bit of a veil in front of the vision. Once I had a fully immersive vision with eyes closed laying down outside on a dark night. I saw African people gathered around in a small village. It was similar to having a dream, except I could move my body and my mind was still well aware of my physical surroundings. None of this involved drugs. Although when I smoked pot, I sometimes had the experience of laying down awake with eyes closed and watching memories play out like a movie.

I came across this looking for people that may be having the same things going on as me, when your eyes are closed. Back in May I went to the eye Dr. because I was seeing flashes of light like a thunder bolt. She told me I have what is called migraine Aura. And also a posterior vitreous detachment. Now of course I came online to find out about this in more detail. The PVD is usually not serious, you see flashes of light sometimes, as sparkles, an arc etc, also little floaters or globes of string or black cobwebs. You can see this against a white background or a blue sky also when you go into a dark room the flashes espectially. I started paying attention, because in a small percentage if you have these in excessive it can turn into a retinal detachment. Which I have been afraid of for months. So know I am aware of everything when I close my eyes, or walk into a dark room, I see white greyish swirls all around the peripheral of my eye, but the center is clear. Now I can't tell if this is in both eyes or just my left with the PVD.

Lately I have been seeing little blobs or round black spots in the peripheral when I close my eyes, and sometimes I think I also see them when I open my eyes, but I don't know for sure. I think since I am so worried about the RD, my mind may be playing tricks on me. I never noticed these things before until I went to the eye dr.

I have at times thought I would see an eye staring back at me when I close my eyes or after images, but never let those bother me I went right to sleep. But this new thing with my eyesight bothers me with the black spots when I close my eyes.

I was just wondering if anyone else might have these same things going on when your eyes are closed?

Here is my situation. I have looked everywhere for an answer. About three years ago, upon awakening, witht he room dark, I see a perfect grid (horizontal and vertical lines). In every direction I look for those 20 seconds the grid is there. The lines are white (or maybe perceived as white but are actually light against the dark in the room). I don't sse it all the time maybe once or twice a month. I saw it intensley last night ... I guess that's why I'm searching for answers. Any thoughts?

I've asked this question to many people. I am most suprised by the answer "I don't see anything". Some have said that when they pay attention, they think they see things like colors and shapes. I have never had to "think" to see, it's just there. I have been lucky to (on very rare occasions) catch myself between the shapes and colors and thought to dream. I have been aware of the transition taking place while it is taking place. Or maybe better explained, I can see the shapes and colors transition into what I see (and feel) as dream. The visual definition becomes more pronounced as auditory kicks in.

Anyway, still don't understand why it's so hard to get a straight answer to this question... or so many different answers to a question that on the surface seems so simple.

To John:

I also have the grid pattern as well as black and white speedway checker board at a sudden loud noise. Normally, I will wake up from a deep sleep, realize I am awake, and see a slow moving grid of dots or tiny, perfectly homogenous shapes over my entire field of vision, but it is also thin like a film to where I can make out the room in front of me. And for the first time, two nights ago, I saw numbers instead of shapes. They were tiny digits, all the same squarish font, and Grey-ish white. The pattern appeared random, but it really doesn't occur long enough for me to tell for certain if it's random or not.

I have become increasingly aware over time that what i can see or what i can make myself see causes a bit of a stir when ever i explain it to anyone. When, for example i go to bed if i can make images appear from my imagination. This is more than likely not strange but what may be is the fact that I can make light appear in the image. This may be a torchlight or sunrise, whatever i choose really. I can make it, with increased concentration go so bright that i actually have to squint. If i then open my eyes i can see flash burn from the image even though it was imaginary. It will last a couple of minutes. I thought flash burn would be physical? All i know is anyone i tell thinks it to be extremely strange. Anyone’s thoughts welcome.

When I close my eyes, especially when I'm very fatigued, I see images that flash by for a moment, each lasting a couple of seconds. They are cyrstal clear and brilliant in color and intense detail much superior to my daily vision. The images are random, a leaf, people's faces, a notebook, a cat, a pencil, a duck, a feather, all in equisite detail and color. For example, when the vision of a leaf comes into my vision with my eyes closed, I can see the individual veins, and the minute varying of the color and texture in the veins, the smallest change in texture on the leaf, and the colors are more beautiful then anything I have ever experienced with my normal vision. I have to relax my eyes after my lids are closed, and the visions are almost peripherial. If I try and look at them directly or focus on them (and I do not need to focus because they are brillantly detailed, just a habit from daily vision) they disappear. I can also make chosen colors appear in shapes, swirles, blobls, etc., but I have no control over the shape, just the color. If I want to envision green, I think about green and it comes in slowly from the black until it's very intense. I'll then shift to thinking about yellow, for example, and I'll see hues of it in the green until the yellow takes over completely, and then I'll move on to another color. I like to enjoy this type of relaxion until I fall asleep.

I recently had an experience where i would see stark, crisp images when my eyes were closed, like a powerpoint presentation. I had never seen any of the images myself, but they were brought before my minds' eye. Sometimes the images were nice, like a picture of a waterfall, but frequently the pictures were graphic and of a sexual nature, and being a Christian I did not want to see those, but they kept coming into my mind against what I wanted.

In my Christian world view I understood the images to be put into my mind by a spirit [an evil spirit], so I said out loud that I did not have to accept the pictures coming to my mind on the basis that Satan [the master of the evil spirits] and his works were defeated by Jesus Christ on the cross and I belong to Jesus Christ. The images immediately stopped and haven't been back. I'm very thankful that I don't have to suffer the tyranny of those spirits on my mind.

I tried this as part of meditation. When I close my eyes, I see darkness. Absolute darkness. I am not afraid of it at all. At times something might pop up from very deep unconscious, not even related to my life. But I wonder, if my eyes are closed, then who is seeing it? Who is aware of the seeing of something? (in my case the darkness). Who is the observer and who is aware of this observer?

I have experienced, at different times, everything in the list. Although, my experience is more like viewing ultra-high resolution images on a screen, and sometimes are highly interactive. A lot of fractal imagery as well as tissue-like or honeycomb patterns have occurred. Many leave a strong impression of reality- though I know I was not physically there, the memory of the imagery and/or experience is indistinguishable from a memory of a real moment(not so passing as a dream). Most, if not all of these have never been particularly disturbing in any way.

It might be worthwhile to add that I also experience extended after-images, as well as after-images which are not quite the same as burn-in and occur within the visual static field I have present at all times in open-eye view.

I either see purple or, rarely, grey clouds and smoke or I see blackness. It is almost always purple. sometimes the clouds and smoke form shapes and faces.

this happens while meditating sometimes. I have seen intermittent streams of purple smoke emit from my temple and from my eyes. and sometimes the smoke looks more like clouds in front of me, moving and changing, sometimes taking forms, sometimes as faces, sometimes as tunnels, It's a nice screensaver while meditating except that it distracts me from meditating, which is kind of fun.

When I apply a small amount of pressure to my eyes, I can see random patterns, colors, shapes, and "ripples" that move across my field of vision. After about 15 seconds of randomly appearing shapes, I see a tunnel. I appear to be moving forward and bouncing off the bottom of the tunnel, slowy moving forward. Also, when I open my eyes, it takes a moment to clear up and I can still see it when my eyes are open! So it is almost like I am blinded for a second. Really interesting.

I am 60 and just today found out not everyone sees shifting, floating, flashing, blobs of color that can be controlled and changed into cartoons or other images when eyes are closed. I have always been able to do this even as a child. The shifting colors can be like the floating mixing colors you see when gasoline is on water, or sometimes more like the arora borialis (sp?).... but it has always been relaxing and enjoyable and i am sad for those who see nothing.... like a blind man discovering sight for the first time... a person who sees nothing or sees only black/gray would be amazed at how wonderful it is.

For those commenters that see shapes and colors when having acupuncture, I think you might have a condition called synesthesia. Many synesthetes claim to experience colors when they have acupuncture. Synesthesia is where a person has mixed perceptions such as hearing colors or tasting shapes. I have colored graphemes (numbers and letters).

I think I can see the veins in my eyes. Because when I close my eyes, there are twisting vine-like lines running into the center of my vision from the periphery, like a cobweb, except in the middle, there is a blank circle with no lines. I think that's my pupil.

Particularly when I am undergoing acupuncture I see images of faces..many different faces...some I can describe in detail. I never know any of these faces. It is fascinating and strange at the same time. The last time I did acupuncture I had an experience that was unsettling, not scary, but I felt different for sometime afterwards. I don't tell people of my experiences b/c I am afraid they will think I am crazy.

I find that what I experience and how clearly I see it, is influenced by by how wake I am. If I have just woken up or if ready to sleep, I can plainly see round dots and hash lines. They are in various colors, red, pink, green, blue, yellow and dark shades of brownish grey. The hues of the lighter colors are always neon. These are always moving. I almost always see spinning "pin wheels," squiggled lines of one color, and various geometric shapes that are three dimensional, line drawings that rotate slowly. All of these shapes are made from rectangular hash marks/bricks. I also, sometimes see what might be face like images and I have often see luminescent eyes looking at me. These are not made from dots or hash marks.

If I am awake, I generally experience indistinct red specks against a grey/black background. If I concentrate, sometimes I also make out barley visible, the neon colored, undulating hash lines.

I am male, 46. No medical diagnosed medical conditions, no use of prescription medications. No recreational drug use. Occasional social drinker. I do not subscribe to any "alternative" belief systems.

I see kaleidoscopic lights any time I close my eyes. It's great. It has a mind of its own so to speak. It comes from the non-recall side of the mind and thus is hard to remember the exact art. After years of practice though one can remember and start drawing them. Many times its cosmological and sometimes imagery. The most weird experience has been watching my mind go to sleep. As you realize, you never remember going to sleep, simply the last thing before sleep. During a meditative colour observation I had a micro sleep where I observed my brain going to sleep. It was like a camera shutter closing, but I had observed it from a point outside the shutter not inside and I had the memory of it. The colour seem to come from outside the body. I have seen the white light of death many times. This produces a retna burn so severe one can not see for a full 5 minutes.

It is interesting topic that of what happens when you close your eyes and has been studied in great detail by the NSA. Sometimes the mind can overlap or open a third eye and see a clear image as clear as day is this just something your mind created. what about seeing another language with you mind you never saw before. My best answer to what you see if this, not all but some people can read light, you will know you have reached the level when everything you squint at the light goes straight up then you are getting into the level of a demigod, your mind naturally is effected by pressure of your eye lids and light that has entered into your retina, yet what people will soon learn is that you can read light like a book and it can send you messages based on what you need, it may be a way for you simply to talk to your subcon yet if I had to give you the best heads up for the future, try to pay attention to everything in life its in the texture of the fabric that you can unravel your fate and future

I had just laid down to sleep and I saw colors of pale yellow waves alternating back and forth sometimes shifting to the blue spectrum. This is always followed by brief flashes of light that are not coming from my room as it is pitch black with the lights off. Suddenly I felt a strange buzzing feeling around my body and I saw a gray background with vertical dotted lines that lasted for 3 to 5 seconds it reminded me of a laptop screen that has malfunctioned. Any ideas as to what this was?

with time and practice anything could be achieved, this is basically the next evolution of the human race, the pineal gland the consciousness other dimensions, remote viewing, time travel you name it.
If you are still interested in this, ask your readers to start a pineal gland detoxification process and the numbers of people seeing stuff will fly high

Ive searched for this sort of information to ensure that i wasnt the only one able to see these things and that i wasnt goin crazy. like previous poster's post about optic nerves shootin off, visualizing faces , other objects and when focusing i can create colors and create images. it may seem crazy but i beleive that some how while in sleep we can create, or our mind creates our dreams. ive been looking into dream recall, and Astral Projection. i would like to beleive these are true meditation methods use around the world. Im willing to move forward to learn how to control it better. like i said , when i focus it allows me to create the images(and like another said) lots of times they vanish almost instantly. my email myspacelakers@hotmail.com if anyone wishes to further discuss this issue or have any other ideas as to what this is exactly then please do email. thank you eric for this page.

Hey, this is not a good thing to be seeing purple and blue vortexes with your eyes closed!! It means you have opened your third eye through occult practices such as meditation, yoga, ect. You have exposed yourself to the occult or have had family members practice these dark arts who have passed this down to you.

I used to meditate and see colors, vortexes and have since renounced my new age practices and am free in Jesus. Jesus is the only way to God. Angels, spirit guides, fortune tellers are not the way to speak to God. Jesus is it.

God sent Jesus to die for our sins and He rose on the third day and now sits on the right hand of the Father. Ask Jesus to be the Lord of your life and He will indwell in you and make you a new creation. God loves you very much and Jesus is the only way to God period. Don't be fooled by the satanic media who wants you to think all roads lead to God!! JESUS IS LORD.

i see very faint bluish green colors shifting in an unpredicdable, sort of psychedelic way in a black background. this is only if i close my eyes in almost zero light settings. sometimes when i first close my eyes i FEEL, not even see, like nonreal abstract things are coming towards me fast, and sometimes even have physical reflexes from it. i think it may just be different depending on how the person has "trained" themselves in using and comprehending their sense of sight. and in some cases, what is floating in a person's subconscious may affect it or something. the subject is neat to think about.

When I close my eyes, I see basically four kinds of things: 1) Static images passing very fast like in a slide show (people, places, animals, strange structures or objects that don't seem so terrestrial, etc.); 2) Dynamic images as if I'm inside a situation or place that I don't know and I'm just an spectator (like inside a car that's running very fast and crashes or seeing some strangers talking in an office); 3) Lights like a tornado of shiny lights in different colors, or lights moving and forming different patterns; 4) Others that are not so frequent.
I'd like to know how the brain generates this episodes. Sometimes I don't even need to close my eyes to see things, it's as if suddenly someone put a tv screen in front of me and I cannot do more than watch. Is there a scientific explanation for this? There are moments in which these images can become annoying, especially when I'm too busy or too tired for them.

I can tell you that it is not usually colors that I see but I see actual images. I have kept a journal of these things since I was eleven years old...i am 29 now and it prevents me from sleeping because I am nowhere close to asleep when it happens...i can be at the doctors office and blink and there are images. There are occasions where I open my eyes and the image is still burned into my eyes though i am walking around. The scary part is that I am able interact with some of these things in my mind...I have seen a boy hiding in a white room and remember communicating with the boy then a scary image just took over everything and I opened my yes and walked to my door to leave my bedroom out of fear and that image was in my eyes though they were wide open...what scares me now is that I have a 7 yr old that is telling me that he sees things that scare him and he has never heard me speak of what I see. i have been scouring the internet to see what it could be but to no luck. Can anyone help out with this one?

I see complex imagery when i close my eyes. It is all in constant motion. I mostly see things, designs, and places. I can not recall seeing faces. Mostly it is broken imagery that is slightly cloudy or out of focus. When I am in a state of relaxation these images become clearer and colors more vivid. I move through spaces and objects revolve in true 3D without loss if information. I try to grasp what I am seeing but most of it moves too fast. It is all very 3 dimensional. Every once in a while I see a dogs eye view of low lying shrubs and dirt cliffs, like I am running low to the ground out in a forest. Kinda cool. Our brains must just be buzzing with visual information. It is fun to see what it regurgitate out.
I am an artist. Once in a blue moon, I get very frustrated because my mind will flash one finished painting after another in full detail in front of me like every half second or faster. Maybe these are images that someone will create. But, I can not retain them in memory so far, to recreate them. Grrr.

Hey Dr. Eric! I am currently a second-year undergraduate male attending UCR! I'm a business major but I'm starting to think that this subject/major (psychology?) intrigues me a lot more.. Anyway, I just wanted to give my input on this matter because its been on my mind since.. today. I actually just started noticing a level four form of closed-eye hallucination (been reading Wikipedia a little) known as remote viewing where I see a different scene or environment everytime I close my eyes whether the room im in is lit or dark. First, I see blackness which, after a couple seconds, slowly fades into a setting. The settings are usually various areas of a dark and dimly-lit house but it ranges to outdoor environments.. which are also dark/dimly-lit.. as if I was positioned in different, random viewpoints in a world where a large-scale power outage has occurred.. And if it is lit (always dimly), the color of the light (which makes the scene I'm viewing visible) is mostly neon blue when I close my eyes in a dark room, or neon red, in a lit room. Sometimes I am viewing the scene in an abstract manner. For example, I will be lookin at the ceiling of a room upside down, so that the floor is actually the ceiling, but I can discern that it is indeed the ceiling because a dimly-lit (say neon blue) light is installed to the floor. I have been taking glimpses of these 'scenes' today but not carefully studying the environment, because to be frank, hallucinations are quite frightening due to their vividly surreal nature. That also explains why I'm posting this at approximately four in the morning haha.. It's my first day experiencing this and it's quite difficult to fall asleep even with the lights on. I read that sleep deprivation might actually worsen it, but there aren't many other options available currently. I wonder if there is any correlation between binge drinking and closed-eye visuals because I would also like to note that I blacked out for my very first time yesterday, making today my hangover day.. And perhaps, not to jump to conclusions or anything, that was a big factor that contributed to my newly heightened sense of closed-eye hallucination?.. I also read that the emotional state that alcohol puts you in can affect your hallucinations too.. and having blacked out, it was definitely a negative emotional state stemming from the fear of the unknown. That might explain why the mood of all the hallucinations seem dark, gloomy, and negative, as opposed to positive or neutral. I've never really had it this intense before I blacked out last night.. But I have had a few neutral episodes during my sleep (dream? not sure) sometimes before yesterday night, which were rare and definitely not as frequent as today. It would be a simple illusion that would confuse me as to why the room was arranged the way it was, and I would then realize that it wasn't my actual room and wake up.. I just want to apologize to those of you on this thread for semi-venting my frustrations but I am also trying to stimulate discussion.. So, thank you Dr. Eric for creating this thread!! It was really useful in showing me other people's viewpoints (oh, the irony of this recurring theme), while comforting to see that I am not alone in my hardships, and that others are also with me experiencing the bizarre realms of the human mind.. Well, I wish the best of luck to all of you whether you guys see it as a blessing or a curse!!

Thanks, anon, for the interesting report. I have heard a couple of anecdotal reports of binge drinking causing more vivid eyes-closed visual experience, but I can't recall anything systematic on the issue.

Take care and maybe see you in one of my classes!

I close my eyes and i see all sorts of images, could be absolutely anything. There is pattern to these images at all. A lot seem to be in cartoon form as basic drawings. The image will change after a few seconds or so and like i said there is no pattern to them. Could be a mountain followed by a bowl of grapes. This could go on for hours while i try and sleep and i describe these images to my wife. What is this called. Am i on the right website for this question or am i way off ?

I see all these things as well but when I see figures or shapes, they are very clear but if I look directly at them, or maybe it's when I realize I see them, they disappear. Most of the time is gray and black fuzz but then all of a sudden I see pictures and people that are walking and/or moving. Today I saw red glitter on a smooth black background. It was beautiful. Could it have something to do with our stress or mood at the time? Is it the same as a dream but you're not quite there yet and that's what makes it disappear? I sure would like to know.

This is called "hypnagogic" and "hypnopompic" imagery. The science on this is very uncertain at this point, I'm afraid to say!

Just posting to say thank you-- I see these faces, shapes and color swirls and have quit asking friends if they do since the answer is usually no. Currently I am seeing the letter T that turns into a cross which turns into an arrow, plus rainbows and eyes, and other more random things.

Oh, my gosh! Me, too! I would just sit there and rub my eyes to watch the tunnel go by. It was years ago but I still remember some of what it looked like. And even now, if I close my eyes I see colors in different shapes moving around everywhere. Anybody else do this? Do you think it could have something to do with synesthesia? (which I have several types of by the way.)

This article and the comments are pretty interesting. I've been thinking about the whole "If I don't pay attention to ALL of the things I see, do I really see it?" For a while I tried to focus on all of it, but that's just too much. What I really wanted to say was that it doesn't matter if I'm not paying attention to my blinking. Regardless of what I'm doing a sudden blackness will block my vision. The first time, I thought the lights went out. But it was just me blinking and not realizing it.

Interesting site. My experiences started as young as 6 when I remember seeing shapes and colours on a dark background, also the shapes and swirls had feeling. It freaked me out and stopped after a while. Now I am 40 a couple of years ago I read in the Encyclopedia about sleep problems and it suggested that I look up whilst my eyes are closed as it helps release serotonin to induce sleep. Helped a lot buy after a while the shapes and thousands of tiny ultra bright pin prick size dots could be seen, then faces and images of friends who had passed were visual and almost like a slide-show of peoples faces I did not know....some were distorted and scary, but not many - also animals. I would experience a rush of energy and overwhelming feeling sometimes. I have researched this a lot, seen some very strong psychics who have explained that I have psychic ability. These visions became stronger when I started cutting back on drinking and stepped up my training. Now I have learned that the eye exercises that I was practising to help sleep have been stimulating the Penal Gland - the walnut shaped ancient part of our mind gland known as our " third eye - spiritual eye " Now I have learned to close the spiritual eye...the intense visuals have calmed.. but what still happens is when I am tired I automatically go into a mellow trance, kind of when you are about to drop of to sleep...my breathing relaxes and I get a bright flash and seem to Astral Project and see the swirls of energy amongst a dark backgroung, am totally aware of what is going on and normally drop off to sleep. Sometimes can spend time with friends who have passed whilst in this sleep state. We all are at different spiritual levels so I would guess the people who experience these are more in touch spiritually than others. Many years ago it started with lots of tiny bright white dots whilst my eyes were open. I have been able to feel spirits around me for some time now, not always.. but what an amazing feeling especially after loved ones have passed. Welcome to you all to your spiritual enlightenment. There is a mass of information out their, depends if you are ready to understand what really is going on..your choice, your journey. Good luck.

I have had an experience twice lately and just happened to come across this site that is so very interesting! I am a 72 year old man and will sat here at the computer and my eyes will become tired and I will have my eyes half way shut, and will see images of two or three small long neck like cats bobbing around. I want to mention that I have glaucoma and implants for cataracts. I thought this might have something to do with my condition. Reading this site makes me aware that it is just not my condition that makes me visualize this! Thanks for a very informative site.

Dude. Omg. I thought I was the only one who could do that!!!!!! I started noticing that when I focused on lines amd such on a wall a certain way they pop out like 3d and I could almost touch them. And the thing with closing my eyes..happened last night. I closed them and started focusing on random stuff floating around. Next thing I knew it was like a full black area that I got sucked into. Like I zoomed my way in there. Everything was still black but there were plants and such and bug like orbs floating around in a dark orange color. I saw someones hand with somwthing in it but when everything looked way too 3d for me I opened my eyes scared. :(

For some reason I seem to be able to navigate with my eyes closed, to the point of picking up a bottle of beer (from an awkward angle) in amongst an array of bottles and glasses without making a sound. All this whilst being tired, drunk and slightly stoned. Whilst trying to sleep I can often make out the shadows and moonlight in the bedroom. I move position to get comfortable and I manage to follow the furniture's silhouettes, all with my eyes closed...

... Why?

Hi Eric, I was wondering if you or anyone else for that matter, could weigh in with something that I've found that no one else I know has apart from me. Its a variant of what you've been talking about. Basically this is what I see when I close my eyes and rub them: a field of deep black with an infinitely complex grid made out of triangles that shows up as the colours red and green bloom from the lines themselves, then as the fireworks of colours continues to bloom I see geometric images flash up as if they where instantly drawn on the grid these images only stay for a fraction of a second before the next one appears. These geometric images tend to be vehicles from planes to cars that are imprinted in with the correct perspective, stuff that i could only dream of incredibly complex! This lasts for a few seconds before stops no matter how long I continue to rub. This has been happening for years as early as i can rember and has never failed to appear. I know you'll probably think this is odd to say the least but I just feel the need to put it out there to see if anyone else experiences what I do. As a side note I'm an artist by trade and iv tried many times to draw what I see, but there is so much in so little time I can never recreate it. Thank you for your time.

Eric Schwitzgebel said...

Luke -- I haven't heard of that exact pattern before, but complex repeating geometric patterns aren't unusual, especially when stimulated with pressure or flashing light. Terrific descriptions, and some drawings, by Purkinje in his early 19th-century books on the topic!

I was surprise because everytime I close my eyes there are so many things that I can see, it start with one and then in seconds it get transform into another and another until make me tired. when I want to do some meditation I need to decide if to do it with my eyes open or close. the things I see can be from flowers, rives, water, sky, planets, etc. very few time I see people. Anyway I was looking for information to know more about why it happens so I found this page and it has been interested to read the comments. thanks

When I close my eyes, I usually just see random shapes and colors. Sometimes a bunch of shapes like swirlies or other fun stuff.

Back when I was still little, I learned that I could draw anything with the colors. Like I could slowly draw out letters or make them appear as a whole but that takes a second or two of lag time.

I could also just draw other shapes but the elaborate or bigger it is the more effort it takes.

It's such a fun game when you're bored.

Interesting blog. As a child saw a presence with my eyes closed-- I could never draw or explain but could feel. It felt like a protection from God. Sort of face-like but always comforting. As an adult, artist, Sensitive, Spiritual-- no more images like this with eyes closed, but I do see filmy energy with my eyes closed in a dark room. Opening eyes- same energy present. Have NEVER discussed these things with people for fear they would think I was really disturbed somehow. Would be interested in hearing if anyone else has had similar experiences??? I too have had a few experiences as if I was watching a movie- never had a meaning yo me in my present life- never knew if they were past life visions? Confusing!

The swirling colours occur in different itnensities depending on something I don't really understand that goes on in my mind, but something that really confused me when trying to get to sleep is I sometimes envision a room of sorts, sometimes images (it changes all the time in terms of space and things inside it), which is very uniform, clean and white. But my mind has a weird 'click'and the room and its features become intensely amplified and etched, making the things and the room seem dirty, blacker, hard, dark and grainy. My mind switches back and fourth between the clean and the dirty image, it can often get very annoying because the darker image is generally unpleasant, but isn't a huge issue, just my experiences with pre-sleep.

I am probably really late to the party, but here goes...

I have fibromyalgia (a little 'thank you' gift from a car crash a year or so ago). Since then when I am trying to sleep I see bright flashes of light when I hear an unexpected noise. I mean a little out of the ordinary, like a light switch being flicked when I don't think it will be, or someone dropping a bowl or plate in the sink. Heck any noise can cause it, I just need to not know it is coming. I also don't seem able to achieve deep sleep, just a kind of paddling in the shallows, although I am aware that there are deeps below me. Frankly, I feel as if I am slowly going insane. The always-there-pain, the headaches and lights, not to mention the lights I see when I try to sleep - it can't all be fibro, can it?
This probably isn't the place to post this, I am sorry, but I need all the help I can get.

When I close my eyes sometimes I see just blacknes at first then a beige colour appears but only a flicker of it then it will get darker and I'll start to see dark blobby shapes that stretch, get smaller and rotate and change. Then there is a bit of flickering and things start to get smaller and further away. Also it keeps on getting darker aswell. But I still see the beige colour. When I see it, it is completely smooth and there is no pattern. But when I see this I can still feel my bed underneath so I know that I'm conscious.

I don't drink alcohol or use any mind altering drugs. Have had the same experiences since childhood

Since I was a child I have always seen fuzzy white tv screen snow like movement when I am actually looking at a white wall. If I close my eyes I see the same thing but the fuzz has more darker colours in it. As I got older I noticed that by staring at one spot on a wall I could get this fuzzy squiggly stuff to spin or swirl. I could influence how this TV snow moved. I didn't realize that this was not common. I though everyone could see this, I have used this process to meditate, daydream and explore. I have also used this to join mentally you might say with others. After explaining to my friends all have been able to see this stuff. So I know it is real.

daleallanb said...

What I tell my friends to try is to first stare at a white wall. They should be able to see what looks like white/blueish/slight red/ slight green tv snow flickering. If they can't see this i suggest an activity. I ask them to stare in one spot on this wall, sitting rather close. The cells in the retina fatigue and a grey blemish begins to be seen. It pulses I expect with the heartbeat. It is a natural occurrence. If they can see this then we talk through what else comes to their attention. I have had exceptional shared visualizations with friends that achieved intense colours and images.

When I close my eyes I see images, like people outlined , mostly like a shadowy, moveing in and out depending on how much I try to focuse in on it. Never a clear image but images all the same . Also when I waking up before I am fully awake and haven't opened my eyes yet its like I can see the room around me but not. Feel really weird.

I have posted here before, anyway, as an artist it has bothered be that these intense images can change fairly quickly into something else. In a very creative relaxed state of mind, if I take a rest, or lay down for night time, I get very finished works of art sometimes abstract or surreal flash in front of me quite quickly. I try to remember them completely, but they come too quickly, like flipping geek pages about 2 to 4 a second. It can be very frustrating. I have been trying to reproduce these images some how, or at least get to the heart of them. After many trials and errors, I have created 2 that are very, very much like the abstract images that apear, see link: http://www.kylewoodart.com/p/digital-abstract-art.html
Are any other artists out there trying the same thing?

I hope that someone can assist me. After a period of a few months of heavy vibration and flashing images, I now have a set of "symptoms" that need explaining. When closing my eye anytime, I see millions of tiny blue stars in a flied in front of me. A vortex (tunnel) will then appear in the field going away from me. The tube is semi see through and I can see the end which looks like it comes out at another level. If I sit and relax, the stars swarm into light and dark patches which move constantly. After a while the dark patches will open like clouds parting and I will see what looks like looking down on a dark sea from high. relaxing further and I will start to see what looks like brown leaves under water. I say water because it actually ripples on the surface like a stone has just been thrown in. There is no trance needed to see this, just relaxing. Can anyone tell me what this is.

Sheldon said...

Hi Everyone. I would like to offer my opinion as I feel that everyone is seeing the same thing. I have seen and experimented with this for the last few months and have come to the following. There are a few components to this. Firstly the field, which I think is called Ether. this is a field which is all around us which we see as more of a static (light brown/grey) substance. Miles mentioned that he could move it and this is correct. Bit of concentration and you can push it away, bring it closer etc. The other parts are the small stars that go into a vortex. I see this as the vortex that is you Chakra which links one of your energy bodies to another that is further away. Apparently there are seven but I can see 3 so far. in order to see this your third eye must be open. This vortex can also be controlled, spun anti/clockwise or moved around. everyone has this. The light that everyone sees is the actual Chakra which is separate from the vortex as it is closer to your skin. This lights up the field/vortex in front of you making it looks like small Blue/Green or white stars. You can test this when you see the colour, cover your hands over your eyes but not your forehead. This should make the whole top part of what you see light up more. Why the colour is because your third eye chakra is blue/white. I can also see my field light up from the bottom from my throat chakra which is a baby blue. So what you are all seeing is your energy body in front of you. I feel that everyone that sees this is in a process of awakening. As far as the images and movies, this I am still trying to figure out as I see them but cant control them yet. I think this is also part of the awakening process and like anything new is a bit sporadic at first. I also have a lot of other "symptoms" but will leave them for another post.

I see bright purple shapes when I am very relaxed or am in a state of joy. I wonder if these colors are related to an emotional state.

Recently I have tried to practice compassionate meditation. I relax, think positive thoughts, and then imagine the purple light I see enveloping someone who is on my mind. Who knows - maybe the person I am thinking about feels this energy. I'll have to set up an experiment and see what happens.

Hello, i hope this is still open.
First of all i have around 150iq i'm 30 years old and i can usually understand what's what. When we close our eyes we can see images formed from our 1.imagination/memory 2.? . Happens to me aswell. If i want to, i can recall memories or imagine pictures while having my eyes closed that look like having eyes opened. images or sounds. But, there's something else too. something weird.

Anon 10 sep, first thing we see when we close our eyes is a random noise of light/dark regions right? We can see normal day pictures/memories or hear vocies while in that state coming from our memories/imagination. But! Sometimes while trying to focus in that state we can see paterns in the dark/light that vaguely look like objects and faces etc. Last night the weirdest thing happened to me aswell. I went to sleep, i was thinking about things, while whithout meaning to, i was focusing on the dark/light paterns. Then in a corner, the blurish/random dark/light paterns revealed a crystal clear dark/ligh image, like it was there, in that spot of the eye, nowhere else. It would come and go, as if i could see it if i focused in that spot but could see it clear. And 3 times i saw it crystal clear... It was something like a crest. like a small black/white crest/symbol, like ones used in shields. like a stamp. I never saw something similar. It was a square, with a man with wings or like horns forming wings left and right from his head, over his back. It was like a drawing, not a real image. like seeing a postcard stamp. I was freaked out from seeing that there, seeing that thing there so clearly made my heart rates jump to the sky, and then i lost it. What the hell was that :)i still have the image in my memory, my memory sucks so i lost parts of it but i can't draw anyway. wish i could.if i see it i will recognise it though so i'm searching now.
The thing is that, are the black/white paterns formed from our mind too? is it something from our imagination? i know about phosphene. what i saw was there, like physicaly seeing something when focusing your vision to it.

When I was a child, and still now, although I haven't really paid much attention to it in the past several years (I am 17) I see patterns swirling around a dark gray background.
Almost always it is first red dots that look like stars swirling like water from the right to the left, and in a sort of circle, and then they turn green. Then they turn into pink, yellow, and cyan circles that always reminded me of the plastic ball pits they used to have at fast food restaurants. Sometimes the patterns will be different if I see a certain image many times in a day. For example, I once went to a cemetery on Memorial Day and saw plenty of American flags. The pattern when I closed my eyes that night was American flags flapping back and forth.

When I close my eyes I see colors. Sometimes the experiences are like staring a blue sun, or green sun, really any color of sun. Sometimes the experiences are colors wiping across a black-void background in smokey patterns. Sometimes I see more than one color. I looked up what I experience everyday. It's called prisoner's cinema. The term was given birth when prisoner guards would lock prisoners in dark cells for long periods of time. The prisoners would report incidents of light shows. I don't have to be locked in a dark cell. All I do is close my eyes, and cover my hand over my eyes, or try to fall asleep. It's very comforting at night.

sometimes when i close my eyes i see a deep purple. Its the most beautiful purple I've ever seen. If i concentrate i can turn it into a blue and sometimes green. The freaky part is, is that when i open my eyes the colours often stay and manifest in the real world. I find that i have to concentrate deeply for this to happen. If i lose my concentration the colours can fade and i will have to bring them back. I've always wondered, does this happen to anyone else???

What would you say of someone who sees vivid images any time he closes his eyes? It is as if he is watching a movie, although it has no obvious plot. He cannot influence the movie but he reports that it is affected by what he say most recently. Any comments?

Greetings! This is a great blog post with many intriguing comments. I can't wait to check out other Splintered Mind blogs. This was my first Google result for "why do i see moving patterns when i close my eyes".

I experience many of what folks have posted here and of the options in the initial survey above. Mind you, a single experience might at most be a combination of at most; three or four before I either reopen my eyes or fall asleep.

I am 46, and for the past couple of years I have developed a visual experience that is quite fascinating and usually occurs when I focus my mind on it, which I'll get to in the following paragraph. When I first close my eyes I see an explosion of white dots on dark background that soon dissipates to darkness at which point I notice a circle in the center, like a halo. The halo is thick at first and then narrows until it's gone (I'm guessing this is a physical reaction or visual artifact of my retinas that I am seeing). After the halo narrows to nothing, the darkness gets darker - like clouds that move away from each other (as if to reveal something) until I see all dark. I'd say by this point, 30 seconds or so have elapsed and this usually occurs with every experience I have.

Then things start to get interesting. I start to see very thin fine horizontal lines, sometimes it's a grid I see, in the entire visual canvas. I can tell these lines are very detailed and almost microscopic. But I am unable to "study" them (much like I am unable to study a floater in my eye). These fine lines then begin to move and break apart to form moving geometric patterns in syncopation. Imagine an animated patterned wallpaper that changes it's pattern. Continuously morphing the pattern, not too unlike a kaleidoscope. The line colors are usually just a different tone of black, but sometimes have traces of red, blue and green. Every instance of the current pattern would be exactly the same with the exact same colors (if any). Thousands, maybe millions, of pattern instances all morphing in syncopation, all of them the same size. After a few moments in this state, the patterns go fractal, continuously morphing, spinning like galaxies. Occasionally these patterns will "bubble" and "slide", like oil in water.

I'm guessing this is some kind of controlled hallucination. But would like to think of it as an exploration of the mind. They say our minds are far more deep and complex than we could ever imagine, and that the average human uses only one-tenth of one percent of their brain. Maybe we are discovering more of what the mind has to offer. Maybe we are beginning to unveil a keyhole of numerous keyholes for which we need to find the key to unlock.

I perceive #5, colored dots moving on a black background. Whether they're random, circular or tracking them into infinity :) I do have to make a conscious effort to notice them.

I welcome any inquiries into further info though I may not make the best test subject lol

This comment is exactly the beginning stage of what I see, my theory is it's a wormhole to your subconscious mind. I don't know if you'll read this, but I've seen it from since I could remember. Try experimenting like I did, try to first see the outline of your body, you start this by moving your arm slowly infront of your face, when you become accustomed, you should be able to notice your whole body and see an outline looking like a shell. The other option is to look directly into the wormhole like spiral and try to make yourself fly through the tunnel, for me I go through the tunnel for about maybe 15 mins before hitting a white wall and after i hit that wall i can either see faces of people who really mean nothing to me, some i recognise some i dont, the most famous one people see is the simpsons characters. but yes you can see your room too, in my opinion it's the sixth sense that buddhism talks about, but a more scientific explanation in my opinion is that by always being alert when you close your eyes you train your mind to notice your surroundings using your other senses, most likely hearing. This could be the "sixth sense" the ability to form mental images of your surroundings. Try it, lie down in a dark room and close your eyes, visualise the room and ask them to move a few times first slowly, then fast. You should be able to kind of see them moving with your eyes closed. I have a theory that because light lets us see the physical, it actually blinds us from the metaphysical. Just a theory though. Goodluck but more importantly, have fun with it, embrace it.

Sam Huang said...

I too experience this, did you happen to have seen uncle sam? or elvis presly? :/ just some famous faces i recognised.
Or any simpsons characters? Yes this isn't a state of sleep, I think it is an exploration of your subconscious mind as from what I experienced, very similar, when you felt you were sucked back out was it because you became alert again? I think it's the stage where your subconscious mind thinks you're going to sleep but infact you're keeping your mind alert by focusing on these images, i remember everytime my mind starts thinking whats with these faces id get sucked back into my body through the tunnel like a million times faster then i went in. its as if my subconscious mind realised i was awake and not asleep. your thoughts?

Sam Huang said...

These visions are most likely our conscious minds meeting our subconscious minds, most likely what you saw was merely an existence in your subconscious memory. We actually remember the faces of people who walk by even if we don't take notice of them, but not in our conscience mind, but subconscious, so my theory about the faces we see when we close our eyes is that we get to see deep parts of our memory, that we are unaware about. Don't take too much meaning to it, as it is just a memory of something you've seen!

Up until I had a heart bypass I saw swirls of colour when I closed my eyes at night in bed. And I would see images - usually faces or animals that changed to the next image. Some I would recognize but most I don't know them. After the surgery the colours and images ended. I've tried to get them back but to no avail. Now years later I'm having problems sleeping (which is common in older people) and took an anxiety releaving med to help with the sleep - the colours/images came back once but are gone again...I was told the colours/images was my third eye and I now believe that the third eye is now blocked by the trauma my body underwent in surgery - I keep working at unblocking them but nothing has worked so far

Everything thing I see is constantly moving. I can see every blade of grass. fallen leaves, trees, flowers and wild animals. Anything on the forest floor actually. Also I see paws of some type of animal and nothing else when I view all this nature. It's not blurry, it is so clear. And I'm definitely not asleep because I close my eyes sitting or lying down. Day or night. It's so exciting to find out what I can see next.

I don't always see the forest floor. There are castles and old huge homes on spacious lawns along with livestock, people and their pets.

I can see the stars at night and the top of trees in the moonlight. It's like I'm up in the sky looking down at it but moving.

Someone told me about the spirit animals we have. This I cannot wrap my mind around. I've never heard of this before. She told me to take a test online to find my spirit animals. They were the wolf, eagle and bear. I've never found any evidence online to make me believe this stuff.

L..... Please feel free to contact me. I have had the Exact experience! I'm color blind and I haven't seen such beautiful and intense colors for so long. I've only had this happen earlier this week..... First time ever but I pray that it isn't the last!

Nicole, I know it has been months since you posted about seeing faces, but I do, too. When relaxing before sleep, with eyes closed, I see fields of color and light, usually like looking up at the stars from a forest, then moving flashes of intense light. Then when more relaxed, peoples faces appear above me and usually to the left. They are flat at first and then the planes of the faces fill out into a "3-D" effect. Many times they have a Native look. I don't think I know them, but they are "familiar" in that I may have seen or met them before. Nicole, I hope you see this.

I have found you can control the images you see. The speckles of light are around us even if your eyes are closed or not. Closing your eyes just help eliminate visual distractions. Specks of light in various colors are energy fields they are every where very pretty in the light. To see them in the light focus on a piece of white paper or blue sky (sort of mediation) and you will see them dancing around. The silver gray clouds tunnels rotating are our thoughts. Try thinking of happy things and the tunnels will rotate clockwise(positive). Think of sad things and the tunnels will rotate counterclockwise(negative).
Thank you for sharing I am happy to have found you all.

Good day everyone. This is a very interesting topic. I recently had tryed DMT, hoping to maybe help open my spirituality link. It was incredible. The sacred geometry, the kalidascope of colours, the visuals....breathtaking. It has been over three weeks since that experience. Last night i was able to to get a little closer to understanding what I saw. For yrs now, I have seen, faces, eyes, and strange whirling clouds of purple,(once it was green)moving across my visual field when my eyes are closed, and the room is completely dark. It starts as a black background, with thousands of tiny yellow spots all over. I look straight ahead, where there will be a tiny bright light. as I continue to stare at this bright light, the smaller tiny yellow lights start to swirl, and funnel towards that light, which inturn begins to grow in size. Then the purple cloud appears, and it rolls. I watch it start at the top of my vision field, and scolls right through to the bottom of the field and disappears, only to reappear at the top again. This can go on for a minute or so, then starts to fade. Upon fading, I start seeing images...faces, eyes, animals, but they are in the peripheral part of my vision. If I attempt to look directly at them they dissappear. Last night, was the first time, since the DMT, That I realized, these are the same kind of images I saw, on the dmt...without the color. I have read up about the Hypnogogic state our brains go into right before falling into REM sleep....Could all this be linked to our bodies releasing its own DMT?

Just right now i'm trying to sleep because its so bright out so i put my arm over my eyes, i see weird things.. its all black then i see this dark blue spark and it goes away, when i was seeing black i saw like grey circles or weird type of shapes and slowly dissapear, i saw even patterns.. i saw green also & i dont know what to think lol its pretty freaky but right now i wanted to see color again so i thought of green & a faint green popped up, i dont know if i'm just imagining, its like i'm opening my eyes while they are closed if that makes sense? it kinda hurt because i think i was keeping my eyes open or something but it was black, like it'll start off as black then a a lil grey circles or more then i look at that & see patterns then i saw colors i dont know what to think lol i'm only 15 so i don't drink or smoke & yeah

I posted here, some years back. As one of the "sees faces" folks, I check back periodically. While it's comforting to know that others share my experience, I've yet to read any explanation of the phenomenon, or what's to become of all this data (commentary). Moderator, please?

Whether I have my closed or open, I see patterns and colours. Sometimes I dream that I remove spirits or entities from people when I sleep and upon waking I see an energy grid with patterns and colour within it. Most recently I have begun to discover that some of the people that I removed these things from, have shared the same dream.

Many hypnagogic and hypnopompic hallucinations being described. I experience these and phosphenes regularly. Near sleep, when ill or medicated, sometimes when intentionally being still and trying to see such things...there are intricate geometric patterns, scenes, people I can't recall seeing in the flesh, wildlife, shifting topography, vibrant colors and a sort of static. Sometimes I try to "go" into a tunnel or scene, there is a sense of motion, and the visuals on rarer occassions become intense enough to cause my eyes to uncontrollably shiver and eyelids to flutter. If I keep attepmting to journey through this without physically moving, a visual static starts to build and I actually feel faint, fearing that I might pass out.

I was curious about this subject because everyone I asked this question also mentioned the same experiences previously mentioned but in my case ever since childhood memory when I close my eyes I do see various shades of black and grey with the exception that if I focus in the direct center of this blackness I see a pattern of a small circular black or white dots as if looking at a distant tunnel.

Harry said...

Who knew this many others thought about this.. I guess it's to be expected. I was just curious because after a lifetime of closing my eyes, it hit me. I always see black and red faintly. So, I had to google it. I wanted to learn about the short term closing of the eyes and learn if everyone saw the same colors ( I was actually picturing it like when the colors in the ocean become less and less colorful the deeper one goes. Now I'm I have a new question. What if the different thickness' of our eyelids or perhaps different transparencies affect what the light does as it filters ever so slightly through. Anyway, nothing more to add.. Thanks for listening.

Mindstream said...

Makyos, that is the Buddhist term for what most of you are seeing when you close your eyes. It is advised to move beyond these things as they are distractions. When you do move past them, then you are in a meditation state.

A grid like a graph is your canvas and your mind will paint on it anything that comes to mind. This is your brain trying to stay busy. Calm the mind and move beyond the random flood of thought until you are controlling what you see and feel. This is mindfulness.

We live in an age where we are constantly entertaining ourselves, so emptying ourselves is not something we are used to. The brain will naturally attempt to fill the space until you train it not to.

When I was in seventh grade I was sitting in a car with a friend I remember putting my head back on the head rest and closing my eyes, it was day time, right away without thinking or trying,, I saw a road in front of me, I couldn't see my body and the only light came from me.. At first I was very scared and went home a cried and it seemed every time I closed my eyes it was there.. Over time I learned how to play with it I wasn't walking I was always moving and floating down this never ending road.. But I got good enough to glide down close to the road so close I could make out each pebble in the road I also learned how to slow my gliding down but a lot of times trying to do this would cause me to spin out of control until I relaxed again. There was never any sound of course it was all visual... I have never shared this before except for with my mother.. I'm 45 now and I have always wondered what this scary, strange and wonderful thing was..

I searched on internet about this topic and got your blog. I am from INDIA. I am experience this from last 3 months When I close my eyes first it is dark . Then after 20 seconds a vision starts and light come to my both eyes. After some time I am able to see everything in front of me what I can see with my opened eyes in front of me. First of all I thought my eyes might be open and it is just my misconception. But now I can feel it.In reality I can see everything with my closed eyes what I can see with my open eyes. I tried to see even with a piece of cloth tied on my eyes. But I was not able to see anything when I tied a piece of cloth but when I removed that I will again able to see everything with close eyes.I have never did meditation. Why this is happening to me I dont know. my email is abhishek_sharma56789@yahoo.com

Okay, this is difficult to explain but I will try. First when I close my eyes, even in the dark, I see a black horizontal abyss which I assume are my eyelids, and after about a minute a dull golden light between and a bit higher than my eyes. I think this is my third eye. After I relax a little while (5-10 minutes) I can kind of split the dull golden light and it overlays with my eyes themselves. Seconds later, I get into a waking dream like state. I am not asleep but deeply relaxed, and I can see through my eyelids. It is weird because if I do not splut the light and get into the relaxed state I can not see anything, but I get the sensation of falling almost, and can grow very nauseous. When the light splits and lines up with my eyes across the 'abyss', I begin doing what I call 'piling the glowing stones'. The darkness quickly fills with a dull blue light that grows into a bright blue, and when it fills my sight I have this immense feeling of safety and peace. The gold light is then bright, like a small sun, and the 'abyss' disappears. When I pile the glowing stones into a wall and concrete the gaps, I feel like my sense of feeling and sight intersect. I can see-feel my brain, see lights in people around me, lights get brighter and I have to fight the instinct to look with my eyes closed or it goes away, much more difficult is fighting to actually keep my eyes closed and keep my body still. The lights I see are hard to grasp-harder to explain. Dull grey at peoples heads, blueish-white auras, a bright energy at the groin area. I must admit I have stopped pusuing this phenomenon: last time I activated it quickly, and the dull golden orb was instead a black vortex, with what looked like lightning(blue, purple, red 'strands' or 'bolts' of an electrical-like appearance) swirling inside. It quickly shaped into a snarling, demin like face and I have not expiremented any further. The scary thing is my heart and head tell me it was some dark or neglected part of myself. As a good and god fearing man I want to learn how to find that part of myself and heal it but have no idea how. Was this the shadow of myself? My inner devil? Has anyone had a similar experience? I built upon this ability from scratch so perhaps someone who has done likewise and had a like experience can explain or elaborate.

Anonymous said...

It is the reflection of the shadow in yourself, not your spirit but essentially the membrane for lack of a better word binding spirit to body. Discovering this membrane and unlocking the ability to see inside of it and out in a state described as 'lucid dreaming' will allow you to examine the image more thoroughly. Combining your physical and third eye, you can come upon a state where you feel awake but are asleep, and if you expiriment and learn to see outside body while 'asleep' and return into the 'dream world' at will, you can eventually identify the curtain between the two. If you 'hold' this veil, you can consciously enter your dreams and explore the phenomenon you see. This is the shadow in yourself, the collection of negative energy in the body. The more fear yougive it, the more power it holds over you. The more positive energy you give it, the more you can control it. (Which is sin, all negativity, the 'devil' within. You are seeing the partof yourself that you fear, that is out of balance with your virtues, that drives people to act outside of their empathetic and loving nature. This part of yourself exists in subconscious. It is your 'nightmares'. Consult a shaman or psychologist, either can help you, if you fear it. Speak of it as a dream to a psychologist. It is not a lie, imagination and dreams are one, so that is where your 'visions' are rooted. Never fear this part of yourself. It is you, the negative energies held within you. Fear of it is to fear things you have done. Submission to it is to feel weak and guilty. Fighting it is anger at what has been done. You must teach your inner shadow to allign to your virtuous nature.

I see a color similar to that of semi-ripe papaya (like orange- with a green tinge?) when I close my eyes without doing anything else. Sometimes I see like the outlines of an object I was looking at, as if it burned into my vision, but it fades after a while. When I close my eyes and cup my hands over my eyes without pressing my palms into them (or when it's dark and I am trying to sleep), I see like grainy images of swirling ribbons against black/dark gray. They actually move across my field of vision and disappear, and then another one comes in. It swirls in and out, and if I concentrate, I see circles within the loops of the "ribbons". The ribbons are either red, pink, or green with a blue tinge, and the circles are the color of the ribbon they are paired with. Both appear really thin, like thinner than normal string. My guess is that I am seeing the color of the cones in my eyes? I don't know why swirling ribbons, though.

when i close my eyes at bed time i see black for a few minutes, then a sort of dark light not like a black light, and faces, of who i have no idea but they are there and as rapidly as i can identify man or woman they change. sometimes they are different, like evil, but for the most part they are just the faces of regular people

I used to do this alot and was able to slow down and focus on a square and zoom in; the squares were all pictures.

I'm not sure how old this post is but. When I close my eyes night or day I see either old fashioned people dancing. I see a tunnel and seek to go to the end of that tunnel and then more faces appear. Recently I wanted an answer to something and I saw faces and desperately asked for a location but nothing. As I said it can be at night or day and I'm wondering what all this means. At times if I let loose faces appear that aren't so nice but I dismiss them and try to find an answer to something. Most always it appears as a movie. Very clear and coloured. I dont know what to make of this. My first experience happened years ago when I laid down to rest one afternoon. The movie just played out. Strange but questioning.

Hi such an interesting discussion. I started reading through but it was such a long thread I gave up. I'm trying to find others who have opened their third eye and have seen things like you are watching scenes in a film but often horrific events and played like in fast speed. Like it will be in a foreign country and either there's been an earthquake or a bomb has hit but people are digging up homes in a village and you can see bodies being dug out. It will play out a scene like this sped up, then rewind and play it from the start. I try to make it go away bit have no control. Sometimes I can continue to see these visions with my eyes open. I am always in a relaxed state but never asleep. I can lie down and they start showing and I can describe what I'm seeing to my husband. Sometimes I see from the perspective of the person as if I'm inhabiting their body. Or like I'm spying on someone doing mundane activities like digging a hole in their yard. Anyone else?

I regularly have the experience of a purple mist that is swirling and i can use thought to go in the center of it. Once I am in the center it is like a ride at a theme park. But I never get to the end.

For the last 15 years on irregular occasions I put myself into trance with eyes open. I see a pattern of energy on the wall and I zoom into it. It then fills the room with a flowing stream of different sized bubbles that are all interacting with each other and my throughts. There is a black moving ocean behind the bubble ls and the bubbles are clear but slightly fluorescents - think really really bold. I get flashes of pink after that and the bubbles dissapear. Takes about 30 mins. Sometimes I have broken through that to just be in a place of bright white and pure black and the collude violently interact with each other.

I understood the bubbles to be pure spirit / gods love.

These are my more normal experiences.

Any thoughts?

Unknown said...

I believe the bubble are spirit/prana/gods love. They rest to your thoughts, you can inhale them and travel inside them. It's a total trip

Unknown said...

You have to control it using Will which come from the heart - you have to recreate the feeling of desire and then imaging however you want to control it. You can enter the center. For me it's like a roller coaster ride - other have found something at the end of the tunnel

As I have been recently diagnosed with ADD/autism I've been questioning everything brain related. So I googled what I considered an "oddity" to see if it was a symptom of said affliction or just something everyone has. When I closed my eyes as a child, I could see circles and stars. Not figments in my minds eye, they were almost tangible with HD clarity and vivid. The stars were always 5 pointed and red, and the circles were blue. They would just fade in about a minute after closing my eyes and drift around as if floating on a pond. After some time, I wondered if I had any control over them. For me the trick was, you had to will them to move. I couldn't just say it in my head. While they were reluctant, they did as I willed if I committed. I got pretty good at it actually. Silly things children do. I'm glad to see it's been something many have enjoyed and allows me a sigh of relief. :)

I see the checkerboard too. Swirly and converging at the center, with some triangles impossibly tesselating into it. I used to see letters when I rubbed my eyes, very clearly. I couldn't align them (though I suspect they would align with the checkerboard) but I could change them all from consonants to vowels, from serif to sans serif font, from capitals to lowercase. It went away at 14, at the same time my synesthesia went away. I've just had one event in the 15 years following, it was a few years ago.

All the comments above refer to images seen behind closed eyes. I experience something strange with my eyes wide open as I lie in bed generally when I am praying, particularly when I am focusing on one spot as I recite a short prayer over and over again. I start seeing a yellowish cloud floating above me. The vision changes into a series of swirling or vibrating black and white lines. At times I see dark billowing clouds moving towards me. Once I also experienced a comet-like red orange flash zoom across the room. It was awesome! I never feel scared during these moments. I can bring these images on or off at will. I often wonder what this phenomenon is and would like to know if anybody has experienced anything similar while fully awake.

I have a suspicion that the checkerboard pattern that so many people see when they rub their eyes actually reveals our true reality - we see the pixel building blocks of our virtual reality in this computer simulated world

There's a lot of suggestions here. Some are assuredly dreams, like the Irish man getting sucked into as toilet and some seem to be attempted communication, like the 'can you see me' posts. I'm interested in weeding out the dreams and producing any scientific evidence that communicating is possible. If not then it's all just dreams. This would probably require several vivid lucid dreamers in the same room.

It started with shades of grey. Then tunnels moving away. Then tunnels towards. Then aurora. Then I control them. Now colors. Now I see faces come out of the folds. Briefly. They don't see me... yet... too brief. Not looking towards me. Glad I found this post. Don't be afraid if you meet someone's eyes and they are terrified because I'm sure I will look like hell in a hand basket, wet my bed then try to do it again! I'm looking for you. Can you see me? Or is it a dream?

I could write a novel.

When I am using the computer or IPad very often afterwords when closing my eyes I see words covering pages of script moving faster than I can actually read or words not moving but unreadavle. this is often even 15 or 20 minutes after I have finished with the computer.

I do also see many other things such as colors, faces or pictures flashing so fast many of them are to fast to totally recognize and I also see many color configurations, never the same and changing all the time. These things do not concern me but the words do....I just wonder if it is healthy.

I have had similar experiences but never have I heard of others having them. Its not the only thing that happens though. Sometimes it comes up during my normal vision and blocks me from seeing and so far it has prevented me from being fatally injured several times. So it isn't a bad thing. So it warrents further investivation. I know those who only see the black background when they close their eyes seem to know more about this than we all seem to on here. I have seen several people I dont know pop up in my life and literally try to make sure I didnt get very far. I have a genetic conditio. Of Lupus and the doctor who should have diagnosed it w0 years ago with the tests he took called my results a false positive after 3 retests. I have suffered 20 years living in pain because of this. I went back to the same clinic w0 years later as its a specialty clinic and they ran the sams exact test and reran them once to be sure and knew I had Lupus and diagnosed it then and started me immediately on medication. Which is very late in the game to be put on it. Age 20 would have been okay but age 40 well thats a different story. I served in the Army for a few years and got out though I had multiple health problems all being caused by Lupus or made worse. I had people interfere with treatments I needed for no reason at all in my life. Doctors mosdiagnose things or dismiss me if I would ask questions about a medication that was making me sicker. All of that and I have always wondered why me but maybe this has something to do with it. Maybe some people have the ablitity to do something or are developing it and the others are aware of it, people in the Government perhaps. Or a secret organization. After all thos would be pretty secret if we cant even find information on the internet and up till now I never even seen mention of this at all. I check once in a while for things like this because I have always know I was different but I didnt what it meant or was really. I ask people periodically at random what do they see when they the close their eyes and have even run small experiements with some friends. Just to see what people reported. Usually while playing cards or something. Just wrote it down and paid attention. Not hard to get basic data. I worked in marketing for a short period and took a few college courses. So the question is what does it mean? What does the fact that most people its optic after images whjch everyone gets or nothing and then sub groups of people popping up that see colors shapes patterns moving and even beyond. Some see bubbles and geometic patterns. So what does it all mean?

I’m not sure how recent this thread is By year ... but i haven’t read anyone talk about the incredibly real experience .... both visual and conscious ... we have in some dreams .... how is this possible to experience with our eyes closed ... “dreaming “. Where does this happen ... not what part of the brain ... but “where” does this experience happen ..... some dreams are so real of an experience that one wakes up and can’t tell if they are in “ reality “ or still in the dream ..... this can’t be a function of the brain processing light ... or random memory restructuring ...
